The safety director plays a critical role in the operation of a hyperbaric facility:

REFERENCES & RESOURCES
"The safety director should also be familiar with the UHMS Guidelines for Hyperbaric Facility Operations and the most current Hyperbaric Facility Accreditation Manual. The UHMS Guidelines for Hyperbaric Facility Operations is a must-have reference for the safety director and program manager. Guidance on staff qualifications, training, suggested elements of a safety program, a physician credentialing checklist, and job descriptions that can be used as a framework for your documentation, are provided."

"Education and training is an ongoing process and should be a high priority."

EDUCATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
"The UHMS expects the safety director to complete at least a 40-credit-hour introductory hyperbaric medicine course approved by the UHMS or National Board of Diving and Hyperbaric Medical Technology (NBDHMT) and a UHMS or NBDHMT-approved hyperbaric safety course. The hyperbaric safety director should be certified by the NBDHMT within one year of assuming the responsibilities of safety director. The safety director should have at least 12 months experience in clinical hyperbaric chamber operations and a working knowledge of all applicable hyperbaric safety codes and decompression procedures before assuming the role as safety director. The UHMS further suggests the safety director attend courses specifically related to operational hyperbaric safety issues. The safety director should also have training and/or experience in hyperbaric chamber maintenance.

Introduction to the Role of Hyperaric Safety Director is a 2-day livestream course providing participants with the required tools for effectively carrying out the role of safety director.

What if the entire hyperbaric staff is new with no prior experience? You still need to assign someone the hyperbaric safety director title, then provide this individual with resources and training to fulfill the responsibilities. Ideally, the entire clinical staff is involved in the safety process. It is never one person’s responsibility, no matter the title or credential. However, in the case of all new staff, you would be more restrictive about what is allowed inside the hyperbaric chamber until you understand why something is safe. Learning what is allowed or not allowed into the hyperbaric chamber is an unending task because as previously mentioned, there are always new products developed for health care.

FACILITY ACCREDITATION
The UHMS Facility Accreditation Manual is a free download and can be foundon the UHMS website in the section titled Hyperbaric Facility Accreditation Program. Even if you are not currently seeking accreditation, you will find this document useful. It contains all the elements UHMS surveyors would use to assess a facility."
