This course content is based on the Wound Care Certification Study Guide, Third Edition, a foundational textbook for wound care practice. The study guide is authored by a group of wound care experts. including Jayesh Shah, MD, MHA, FUHM, Catherine Milne, MSN, CWOCN-AP, and others. We recommend that this study guide course be combined with the 10.5 hour classroom-based course to maximize learning up to 25.5 hours and enhance preparation for a certification exam. The study guide book (print book) is included with course registration.

If you have already purchased this study guide course, you will not have to pay for it again when you enroll in the full 25.5 hour program, you will only need to enroll in the 10.5 hour classroom/livestream webinar day. KEY CONCEPTS

The key concepts covered in this course are as follows:

1. Skin is arranged over subcutaneous fatty tissue in six distinct layers.

2. Approximately 20 different cell types are found in skin, each with unique roles.

3. The functions of skin include waterproofing, insulation, temperature regulation, barrier against toxins and pathogens, protection against solar radiation, and sensation of the environment.

4. Skin is a dynamic organ, with respect to structural changes throughout life and the movement and interactions of cells within the skin at any point in time.

KEY CONCEPTS

• Lymphedema is a vascular disorder that is either due to congenital malformations of the lymphatic system (primary etiology) or related to an insult or injury to the lymphatic system (secondary etiology) such as surgery, trauma, radiation, malignancies, or infections.
• Secondary lymphedema is more prevalent than primary lymphedema.
• On a global scale, the leading cause of lymphedema in the world is due to lymphatic filariasis, a parasitic form of lymphedema spread through mosquitoes.
• Cellulitis is common in patients with lymphedema and may require recurrent hospitalizations.
• ApositiveStemmer’ssignisasimpleclinicalfindingthatyieldsadefinitivediag- nosis of lymphedema.
• Lymphoscintigraphy is accurate for detecting abnormalities of the lymphatic sys- tem in the extremities and shows slow or absent lymph flow and areas of reflux (backflow).
• Complete decongestive therapy (CDT) is considered the standard of care for lymphedema management.
• Surgery for lymphedema is not curative but may help manage severe cases.
• Multilayered lymphedema bandaging (MLLB) is composed of multiple layers of short-stretch bandages, along with hygienic lining and padding materials, to cre- ate graduated compression with high containment.
• All patients need to be transitioned into compression garments for lifelong maintenance management of lymphedema.
• Intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) devices, or lymphedema pumps, may be considered adjunctive to effectively manage lymphedema.
